The rain was not an obstacle Dec. 11 as many gathered in parishes throughout the diocese to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The occasion has its roots in Mexico, where it’s believed that in 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared to the indigenous Juan Diego. Diego was canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
Named as the “Patroness of the Americas,” Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, or Our Lady of Guadalupe in English, is one of the most revered religious figures in Mexico.
In Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama led the Mass and wore an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
“Miracles appear when we accept the gifts that God has given, and we share our love with others,” the bishop said. “Let the Virgin Mary touch us and feel the love of God through her.”
After Mass, dancers paid tribute to our Lady of Guadalupe. A group of youth performed a play representing the story of Juan Diego when the Virgin Mary appeared to him. The celebration ended with a Mariachi serenade in her honor.
