The bishops of the Catholic Ecclesiastical Province of Atlanta, which covers Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, met Nov. 27-28. In the words of Bishop Luis Zarama, who hosted the prelates in Raleigh, it was a time not only to conduct the business of the province on behalf of the faithful, but also to build on the fraternity and community of the group, which ultimately assists them in their efforts.
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the group celebrated Mass at the Catholic Center in Raleigh, where the offices of the Diocese of Raleigh are located. Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., was the celebrant. In his homily, he reflected on the prophetic readings at the close of the liturgical year. He reminded his brother bishops and staff in attendance that when we speak of the end times, it is not only an opportunity to prepare and to live our lives with “the end in mind,” but it is also a reminder of the promise and hope for all to be found in Jesus Christ.
Joining Archbishop Hartmayer were the auxillary bishops of Atlanta, Bishop Joel Konzen, SM, Bishop Ned Shlesinger and Bishop John Nhán Trán. Also attending were Diocese of Charleston Bishop Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS, Bishop Emeritus Robert Guglielmone of Charleston, and Bishop Stephen D. Parkes of the Diocese of Savannah.
