Bishop Zarama visits St. Thomas More School for multicultural Mass and festival

On Friday, March 17 Bishop Luis Zarama visited St. Thomas More School in Chapel Hill and celebrated a multicultural Mass with students, parents, teachers and staff.

Students from kindergarten through middle school wore the colors and cultural dress representative of their families’ countries of origin. Music during the Mass was sung in both English and Spanish, and prayer petitions were spoken in several languages.

During his homily, Bishop Luis walked around the church as if he were in the classroom, asking very particular questions of the students.

“Does anyone know how what my hat is called?” he asked. Immediately several hands were raised. “Yes! It's called a mitre,” responded one student.

When Bishop Luis asked, “What is love?” a young girl responded, “Love is to think about others.”

Bishop Luis agreed and reminded the students that God asks us to live in commandment of love. “Love is always there to serve. Love means sacrificing something to make another happy,” he said.

After Mass, the school hosted an international fair with exhibits that showcased different countries. Students had the opportunity to visit each exhibit and get their “passport” stamped at each one. The fair ended in the cafeteria with delicious dishes also representative of different countries.
