During the Angelus, Pope Francis expressed his concern for the ongoing instability in Niger and throughout the Sahel region of Africa.
"I join the Bishops' appeal in favor of peace in the country and stability in the Sahel Region," Pope Francis said. "I prayerfully join the efforts of the international community to find, as soon as possible, a peaceful solution for the good of all. Let us pray for the dear people of Niger."
There were thousands of people in St. Peter's Square and the pope greeted everyone present. But he directed a special greeting to a group of Americans and Spaniards.
"I greet all of you: the faithful of Rome and pilgrims from different countries. In particular, I greet the new seminarians of the North American College and wish them a good formation journey. I also greet the community 'de la Borriquita' of Cádiz, Spain," he said.
The day before, Pope Francis had begun to resume the normal rhythm of official meetings at the Apostolic Palace. After the trip to Lisbon, he had reduced the number of encounters compared to other years.
