On the morning of November 5th, Catholic scouts and scouters from across the Diocese of Raleigh gathered at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral for the Catholic Scouting Mass of Thanksgiving, sponsored by The Catholic Committee on Scouting of the Diocese of Raleigh (CCOS). Father Scott McCue, Diocesan Scout Chaplain and Pastor of St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill, was the celebrant of the Mass. A number of scouts participated in the Mass as readers and gift bearers.
During his homily, Father Scott spoke about giving thanks for scout leaders and the example that they provide for scouts. He spoke about his own scoutmaster when he was growing up, Mr. Charlie Smith, and how much that leader influenced him and provided a good example for him. In addition, Father Scott also spoke about the importance of service in the life of scouts. Those gathered also learned about the history and building of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral.
Two scouts, Claire Steinbach and Francisco Loncán, were presented with the Ad Altare Dei (To the Altar of God) emblem. This is one of the religious emblems that scouts can earn and focuses on the seven sacraments.
Following the Mass, scouts and scouters gathered for a luncheon at Our Lady of Lourdes in Raleigh, which was prepared by the local Knights of Columbus council.
The next diocesan event sponsored by the CCOS will be the Catholic Scout Camporee at Camp Bowers in White Oak, NC, the weekend of March 10-12. For more information on the camporee and Catholic Scouting, visit www.dioceseofraleigh.org/scouting.
