RALEIGH - Approximately 130 priests and bishops of the Atlanta Province gathered August 21 - 23 for an assembly hosted by the Diocese of Raleigh. The Atlanta Province includes the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Dioceses of Charleston, Charlotte, Raleigh and Savannah.
The assembly included an evening Mass Aug. 22 at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. During his homily, Bishop Luis Zarama acknowledged the Queenship of Mary and recalled how Mary asked, “How can this happen to me?” Bishop Luis remarked that sometimes priests and bishops react in a similar way to their vocational call and that they must ask both “how” and “why.”
“The answer is that God called us because of his love and his trust in each one of us,” Bishop Luis said. “He called us because he knows us, he loves us and he trusts in us. Our mission is to make present the mystery of his love through the life of the sacraments in the way that we serve the people.”
Atlanta's Archbishop Gregory John Hartmayer, O.F.M. Conv., presided and thanked Bishop Luis for his homily. The archbishop expressed his gratitude to all of the priests of the Diocese of Raleigh for their warm hospitality and kindness.
During the assembly, the clergy heard a series of talks from keynote speaker Chris Baglow, who holds a Ph.D. and is a theology professor and initiative director at The McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke on the theme of science, faith and truth.
Baglow serves as theological advisor to the Board of Directors of the Society of Catholic Scientists, as a faith-science consultant for the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization, and as a contributor to the JTF-funded science and religion programming of the Word on Fire Institute. Most recently, he authored the transcripts for Wonder: The Harmony of Faith and Science, a Word on Fire film series directed by Manny Marquez and narrated by Jonathan Roumie. His work has appeared in That Man is You, Crux and Church Life Journal.
