Position Summary:
Sacred Heart Parish in Pinehurst, NC is seeking a Part-Time Youth Minister to renew, rejuvenate, and fully develop the youth ministry program in our parish. This position will be working closely with the Pastor, Parish Staff and the Parish Office of Faith Formation to sustain and direct a Youth Ministry Program for students grades 6-12. The ideal candidate is faithful to the Catholic Church and her teachings in the areas of scripture, doctrine, morality, and spirituality and must practice fidelity to these teachings.

Position reports to: Pastor and Director, Religious Education.

Note: The Parish is open to the possibility of extending this job scope to a full-time position depending on growth in participation demand.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and develop a youth ministry program for junior and senior High School aged students, the foundation for which must be monthly or bi-weekly meetings/experiences.
  • Create lesson plans for youth meetings and submit to DRE prior to class sessions.
  • Develop a youth ministry program that nurtures an active prayer life for youth members and cultivates participation in the communal, liturgical, and sacramental life of the church.
  • Oversee and supervise a core team of adult and young adult volunteer disciples that assist the youth minister with the program content and logistics/hospitality.
  • Build and maintain a relationship with the Diocesan Offices of Youth Ministry, Vocations, Pro-Life Matters, and Safe-Environment.
  • Coordinate and assist with parish-wide Youth Retreats, Prayer and Worship Experiences, Justice and Service Projects, Youth Leadership, and Teen Bible Study.
  • Attend parish staff meetings and pastoral council meetings, as needed. Attend Deanery meetings, as needed.
  • Work between 15 and 25 hours per week (estimated).  Be available Sunday mornings during the academic year for Faith Formation classes for junior high school and Confirmation students, and occasional evenings monthly or bi-weekly for meetings per the overall plan for the ministry.
  • Create, guide, and/or lead retreats for Confirmation candidates and youth and young adults in cooperation with the Pastor and Director, Religious Education.
  • Organize trips to local, diocesan, national and international youth and young adult events as approved by the Pastor and Director, Religious Education.
  • Form and cultivate youth and young adult ministry participation and leadership within the parish.
  • Maintain a list of the parish youth, young adults, adult leadership and volunteer disciples who have regular contact with young people for the Parish Staff and the Diocesan Office of Safe Environment.
  • Develop and maintain the Parish Youth Ministry budget and social media accounts.
  • Responsible for two review reports per year submitted to the Pastor and Director, Religious Education and reported to Pastoral Council.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in theology, Religious Education, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in leading youth ministry groups is preferred.
  • Must be devoted to the Holy Eucharist and the sacramental life of the Church.
  • Possess public relation skills and the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate well with youth and young adults, to parents, volunteers, and parish staff.
  • Familiarity with various items of office equipment: PC or Mac Word Processing and other Applications; Microsoft Word/Excel/Power-point or Mac equivalent; LCD Projector; Sound System/PA.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.).
  • Must be Diocese of Raleigh, Safe Environment Program certified or be willing to complete Safe Environment Training prior to start.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing a criminal background and reference checks.

Sacred Heart Church serves the community of Pinehurst, NC.  The Pastor, Very Rev. John Forbes, VF is assisted in ministry by Parochial Vicar, two deacons, and Chaplain Associate for Pastoral Counseling.  This is a vibrant, growing parish of approximately 2,000 families.  Pinehurst, NC is primarily, but not exclusively, an affluent community with a high concentration of transient, young military families and retired couples and singles, most of whom are not native to the area.
